Gorham's oldest wiring lives in its oldest village. Since 1992 the National Register has recognized the Gorham Historic District, which takes in the streets bounded by College, Church, Cross, State and Maple, and the Academy Building on the University of Southern Maine campus dates to 1806. The newest third of the town, built since 2000, mostly needs additions rather than repairs: basement finishes, home offices, garage circuits and dedicated lines for heat pumps. Two- to four-unit buildings hold only about 6.5 percent of Gorham's homes, but the town's Code Division issues a separate submeter permit, a detail that matters when a house is split into apartments or an accessory unit gets its own meter.
