A Level 2 charger runs on a 240-volt circuit, the same kind that feeds an electric range or dryer. The electrical code treats EV charging as a continuous load, which means the circuit must be rated at 125 percent of what the charger draws: a charger set to 32 amps needs a 40-amp circuit, and a 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp circuit. Getting that relationship right is the heart of a safe install.
Before we quote, we do a load calculation on your existing service to confirm the panel can carry the new circuit alongside your heat, hot water and appliances. If the numbers are tight, there are options short of a full service upgrade — setting the charger to a lower output, or using load-management equipment that reduces charging when the house is busy. If a panel upgrade is the right answer, we say so before work starts.
On installation day we mount the charger where the cable reaches your charge port comfortably, run the circuit from the panel in cable or conduit, install the correct breaker, set the charger to match the circuit, and test a charging session. Outdoor locations get equipment rated for outdoor use and weatherproof fittings.
Cold weather reduces battery range and makes preconditioning the cabin while plugged in far more valuable, so Maine drivers tend to lean on home charging harder in January than in July. Chargers mounted outside need to be rated for snow and ice, and cable runs should be kept clear of plow and shovel paths.
