“After needing an emergency fix late on a cold winter's Sunday, Goodnow came to the rescue! With no power and dark approaching we called around and couldn't find any place that could help get things going before the following day.”

Good lighting starts with a plan, not a fixture catalog. We walk the room with you and think in layers — general light from recessed or surface fixtures, task light over counters and desks, and accent light for artwork or architecture — then decide which layers need their own switch or dimmer. The switching plan matters as much as the fixtures: a room that is lit well but switched badly is still frustrating.
Recessed lights in a ceiling below an attic have to be rated for contact with insulation (IC-rated) and airtight, so they do not leak warm air into the attic in winter. Slim LED wafer fixtures make this easier in older homes because they need very little ceiling depth. For under-cabinet and cove lighting, we choose between line-voltage fixtures and low-voltage tape with a remote driver, and plan where that driver will live so it can be serviced.
Dimmers need to match the LEDs they control. Many flicker, buzz or will not dim smoothly on older dimmers, so we specify LED-rated controls and test the dimming range before we leave.
Portland gets only about nine hours of daylight around the winter solstice, so interior lighting carries more of the load from November to February than in most of the country. Colour temperature and color rendering matter more when you live under artificial light for much of the day; a warm 2700–3000K source with a high color rendering index makes most living spaces feel comfortable. Outdoor fixtures near the coast should be chosen for salt-air resistance.
See why LED lighting upgrades pay back fastest for the energy arithmetic, and pair new lighting with smart home wiring for scenes and schedules. Businesses can start with commercial electrical services. Local pages: lighting installation in Portland and lighting installation in Westbrook.
Each town page covers what its housing, grid and permit office mean for lighting installation.
This work often goes hand in hand with smart home wiring, commercial electrical services, and residential electrical work.
