What Residential Electrical Work Involves

Most residential calls fall into three groups: something has stopped working, something is being added, or something is being remodeled. A dead outlet or a tripping breaker starts with diagnosis — tracing the circuit, testing connections, and finding the loose splice, failed device or overloaded circuit behind the symptom. We fix the cause, not just the part that failed.

Additions and remodels start with a load check. Kitchens need dedicated appliance circuits and counter receptacles with GFCI protection; bathrooms need their own 20-amp circuit; bedrooms and living spaces need AFCI protection under current code. When we open a wall in an older house we also look at what is already in it, because a remodel is the cheapest time to replace wiring that is past its useful life.

In occupied, finished homes we fish new wire through existing walls and ceilings wherever possible, cut only small access holes, and leave the room clean at the end of each day.

Signs Your Home Needs an Electrician

  • Lights flicker or dim when an appliance starts, or a breaker trips repeatedly.
  • Outlets or switch plates feel warm, buzz, or show scorch marks.
  • The house still has two-prong ungrounded outlets, knob-and-tube wiring, or a fuse panel.
  • You rely on extension cords and power strips because there are not enough outlets.
  • You are planning a kitchen, bath, basement or addition project.

What Affects the Cost of Residential Electrical Work

  • Access — an unfinished basement or open attic makes wiring runs quick; finished plaster walls take longer.
  • The condition of existing wiring — old splices or undersized wire found during the job may need correcting before new work can connect to it.
  • Panel capacity — adding circuits to a full or undersized panel may require an upgrade first.
  • Devices and fixtures — standard devices, smart switches and designer fixtures differ widely in price.
  • Permits — required for most new wiring and built into the written estimate.

Older Homes in Southern Maine

Southern Maine has a large share of older homes, and it is common to find several generations of wiring in one house: cloth-insulated cable, knob-and-tube in the walls of pre-war homes, and ungrounded two-prong outlets. Code offers practical ways to make those outlets safer — for example, GFCI protection where a ground cannot be run — and a licensed electrician can explain which option fits each room. Maine enforces the 2026 National Electrical Code for new installations, so new circuits are wired to current requirements even when the rest of the house is older.

If your panel is full or still on fuses, start with electrical panel upgrades and our guide on why Southern Maine homes outgrow 100-amp panels. For lighting projects, see lighting installation and LED upgrades; for switches and automation, smart home wiring. Homeowners in our two busiest markets can go straight to residential electrical work in Portland or in Westbrook.
