A standby generator is a permanent appliance: it sits on a pad outside the house, runs on natural gas or propane, and connects to your electrical system through a transfer switch. The transfer switch is what makes it safe — it disconnects the house from the utility before the generator powers it, so power can never feed back onto the lines where line workers are repairing damage.

The job starts with sizing. We look at what you want to keep running — heat, well pump, sump pump, refrigeration, lights, internet — and at the large loads that start with a surge, such as heat-pump compressors and well pumps. From there we choose between whole-house coverage and an essential-circuits design, and between a single transfer switch and load-management modules that shed large loads when the generator is near capacity.

Installation covers the pad and placement, fuel connection by a licensed gas or propane technician, the transfer switch wiring at the panel, and commissioning — starting the unit, transferring under load, and setting its automatic exercise schedule. A portable generator can also be connected safely with a code-approved inlet and interlock, which we install when a standby unit is more than you need.
