Electrical Work in Buxton
Buxton follows the Saco River between Hollis and Gorham, a town of about 8,500 people spread across 41 square miles and a string of villages: Bar Mills, Groveville, West Buxton, Salmon Falls, Chicopee and Buxton Center. Its homes are mostly owner-occupied houses on rural lots, a mix of old farmhouses, mid-century homes and newer houses, and nearly three in four of them heat with oil. Census survey estimates put Buxton at about 3,900 housing units, only about 140 of them seasonal. Owners occupy around 80 percent, and single-family houses account for about 78 percent, yet small multi-family buildings matter here too: roughly one home in ten, about 10.5 percent, sits in a building of two to four apartments, and mobile homes add about 8 percent. Farmhouses and village homes older than 1940 make up roughly 19 percent of the stock; about 21 percent date from 1960 to 1979; and about half are newer than 1980, putting the median at 1981. Fuel oil heats about 74 percent of Buxton's occupied homes, more than in any other York County town the Census Bureau surveys. Wood heats about 9 percent, propane about 8.5 percent and electricity about 5 percent, and no homes report piped utility gas. That makes Buxton a town where heat-pump conversions are just getting started, and each one moves heating load onto a panel sized for an oil burner, a well pump and some lights. Heat pumps, including mini-splits, appear as a separate fee item on Buxton's electrical application, so the town permits and inspects each installation itself.
Power Outages and the Grid in Buxton
Central Maine Power serves Buxton; the town's electrical permit form even asks for the owner's CMP account number. The Saco River generates power here too: Skelton Dam, completed in 1948 on the Buxton-Dayton line, has 16.8 megawatts of hydroelectric capacity, but homes still depend on the same overhead distribution lines as everywhere else. Across Maine, the October 2017 nor'easter produced more than 400,000 outages, a number of them over a week long, and the nor'easter of December 2023 about 300,000. On rural roads, a home on a private well loses its water along with the power, and an oil burner stops too.
Getting to Know Buxton
Buxton's first permanent settlement began near Salmon Falls in 1750, and the town was incorporated in 1772. Mills grew up where the Saco drops, and the villages kept their own identities; Bar Mills sits on the river where Routes 4A and 112 meet. Listed in 1987, the Salmon Falls (East) Historic District groups thirteen properties on Route 117 and Simpson Road, most of them Federal or Greek Revival houses built between about 1800 and 1850. Other National Register listings include Elden's Store, the Buxton Powder House, the First Congregational Church and the Royal Brewster House. Bonny Eagle Pond covers 211 acres.
Electrical Permits and Inspections in Buxton
Buxton issues its own electrical permits. The town's application asks for the electrician's license number and the owner's CMP account number, and lists fees for services, added circuits, heat pumps, generators, pools, solar and more. Wiring has to stay open until the town's inspector has seen and approved it, and the office wants 36 hours' notice or more to book that visit. The town ordinance also includes a floodplain management article, which matters for equipment on low land near the Saco and Little rivers. Work started from July 1, 2026 onward is inspected against the 2026 edition of the National Electrical Code.
