Saco is well placed for an electric car. The Maine Turnpike has two Saco interchanges, Exit 35 at Route 112 and Exit 36 at Interstate 195 toward Old Orchard Beach, and U.S. Route 1 runs through the middle of the city, and whether the daily drive runs north to Portland or south toward Kittery and Portsmouth, it starts on a battery topped up in the owner's own driveway. That driveway is the norm here: the Census counts about 56 percent of Saco homes as detached single-family houses, and about 73 percent are lived in by their owners, so most households can choose a spot on the garage wall for a Level 2 unit. Renters in downtown apartments face a different question, since charging there depends on the building owner.
Cold weather is the main reason to install a 240-volt charger rather than rely on a standard outlet. Range drops in a Maine January, preheating the cabin while plugged in draws from the house, and a Level 2 unit refills a day's driving overnight where a 120-volt outlet may not. The panel check comes first. Saco's post-2000 subdivisions were mostly built with 200 amps at the meter, but a Main Street house or a duplex on an older 100-amp service may need an upgrade, a smaller charging circuit, or a load-managing charger that throttles back when the dryer and range are running.
In a Saco duplex, decide early whose electric bill the car lands on. A circuit from the tenant's panel bills the tenant; one from the house panel bills the owner. Either way, the charger may qualify for Efficiency Maine's off-peak incentive, currently $400 per charger for up to two at one address: $200 comes off at the register, and a second $200 arrives by mail once the unit is online and scheduled to hold off between 5 and 9 p.m. on weekdays. Goodnow Electric can hardwire a Tesla Wall Connector or a universal charger or set a receptacle for a plug-in model, and takes care of the city permit and Saco's inspection. If the car lives in a detached garage, the cost of trenching or conduit out to it is written into the free estimate before any work begins.
