Eliot handles generators through its building permit process. The town’s notice sets a flat $25 building permit for a generator installation, with no separate town electrical permit, and says lot coverage, setbacks and similar dimensional rules will not be reviewed when the generator is treated as a utility. The electrical work still has to be done by a Maine-licensed master electrician, or a limited electrician whose license covers it, and the transfer equipment has to meet the National Electrical Code. For a standby unit that means an automatic transfer switch; for a portable one, an interlock kit or manual transfer switch and an outdoor inlet, so generator power can never flow back onto Central Maine Power’s lines.
Outages in Eliot tend to come from trees. Its roads wind between farms, woodlots and river frontage, and a single limb can take a service drop down in a nor’easter or an ice storm. Regional events hit hard too: the October 2017 windstorm cut power to more than 400,000 Maine customers, some for over a week, and the January 2024 storms led to a federal disaster declaration that included York County. When the power fails, an Eliot house on oil heat still loses its boiler, because the burner and circulators need electricity, and houses with sump pumps, well pumps or medical equipment lose far more.
Fuel is a real choice here. Unitil lists Eliot among its Maine gas communities, so a house on a gas line can feed a standby generator directly, while most homes will use propane from a tank sized for several days of running. Placement near the Piscataqua or Sturgeon Creek should account for Eliot’s shoreland zoning rules and for flood-prone ground, keeping the unit and its connections above the water that collects in a storm.
