The river forms its western and southern boundary, and Routes 113, 107, 11, 5 and 117 link East Baldwin, West Baldwin, North Baldwin and Cornish Station. Baldwin began as Flintstown Plantation, granted in 1774 to survivors of a Concord, Massachusetts military company, and was incorporated in 1802, named for Colonel Loammi Baldwin of Baldwin apple fame. Orchards and an apple-drying factory in East Baldwin, water-powered mills, and the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad along the Saco shaped the town. The old rail line is now the Mountain Division Trail. A nineteenth-century Congregational church still stands in East Baldwin, and the Union Church of North Baldwin dates to 1873. Sand Pond Beach in East Baldwin is the town's public beach.
