Limington fills the far northeastern corner of York County between the Saco and Little Ossipee rivers, with a National Register village at the crossing of Routes 11 and 117, seven ponds and about 4,000 residents on wooded roads. Most Limington houses are rural single-family homes: about 89 percent are detached houses, roughly 9 percent are mobile homes, and 91 percent are lived in by their owners, according to Census estimates covering some 1,740 homes. Building came in steady waves rather than one boom. About 7 percent predate 1940, about 29 percent went up between 1960 and 1979, 32 percent between 1980 and 1999 and 27 percent since 2000, for a median year built of 1986. Those numbers describe a town where a 1790s village house with old wiring may sit a mile from a 1970s ranch on a 100-amp panel and a 2010s build with a generator inlet already in place. Mobile homes bring their own service equipment and rules.
Oil is the heating fuel in about 71 percent of occupied Limington homes, according to Census estimates, with wood at about 12 percent, propane near 10 percent and electricity under 5 percent. No home reports piped utility gas. That leaves a lot of room for heat pumps, and Limington’s own electrical permit form lists mini-split heat pumps as their own line item, priced by the unit and by each indoor head. Each oil-to-heat-pump conversion, plus any EV charger, adds load that older 100-amp services were never sized to carry through a cold snap.
Central Maine Power serves Limington, which state utility maps place in CMP’s Alfred service district. The town’s roads run through woods, and trees on lines are the pattern. In the April 4, 2024 snowstorm Limington was one of the towns where multiple trees fell onto power lines and roads, as CMP reported more than 90,000 York County customers out. On June 18, 2026 the Limington Fire and EMS Department reported a tree down on power lines along Douglas Road after severe thunderstorms. Homes on private wells lose water along with power, which makes backup generation a practical question here.
Settled when Amos Chase built a mill at the mouth of the Little Ossipee River in 1773 and incorporated in 1792, Limington grew as a farming and lumber town. Its village at Routes 11 and 117 is the Limington Historic District, 24 buildings from the late 18th to mid-19th centuries, listed on the National Register in 1999. Limington Academy dates to 1852 and the Davis Memorial Library to 1912, designed by John Calvin Stevens. In East Limington, the Capt. Josiah E. Chase Octagon House of about 1858 is one of twelve such houses known in Maine.
Limington is one of the towns that handles electrical permits locally. The town’s code enforcement page says electrical permits must be obtained from the Code Office, and its permit form carries an electrical inspector’s sign-off, requires at least 48 hours’ notice for inspection, and states that no wiring may be covered or concealed until it has been inspected or approved. Floodplain construction needs Planning Board approval and a flood permit first. As a Saco River Corridor town, land near the Saco and Little Ossipee rivers may also need Corridor Commission review.
