Casco lies between Sebago Lake and a chain of smaller waters, Pleasant Lake, Thomas Pond, Crescent Lake and the southern tip of Thompson Lake, with U.S. Route 302 running through the middle. It is a town of lake houses, summer camps and rural homes on private wells, and its villages at Casco Village, South Casco, Webbs Mills and Cook's Mills still mark where the old mills stood. About 60 percent of Casco's occupied homes heat with fuel oil, according to the ACS, with propane at about 18 percent, wood at about 12 percent and electricity at about 7 percent. Utility gas reaches under 1 percent. That heavy oil share makes heat pump conversions the biggest new electrical load in town, and on a small or aging service a heat pump plus an EV charger can exceed what the panel carries. Casco already has public EV charging in two places, according to its comprehensive plan: in Casco Village behind the community center and in South Casco near the baseball field. At home, Efficiency Maine offers $400 toward a qualifying off-peak Level 2 charger.
Power Outages and the Grid in Casco
Central Maine Power serves Casco, and the town's comprehensive plan notes that three-phase power reaches its commercial zones while homes elsewhere sit on single-phase lines running through heavily wooded land and along the lakeshores. Storms test that layout. The October 2017 windstorm caused more than 400,000 outages across Maine, some lasting over a week, and the December 2023 storm produced about 300,000 more. Casco has no public water supply; the plan states that properties are served by private wells, so a power failure also stops the well pump. That is why standby generators, transfer switches and generator inlets matter so much in this town.
Getting to Know Casco
Casco was set off from Raymond and incorporated in 1841, and its early sawmills and gristmills clustered at South Casco, Cook's Mills, Webb's Mills and Casco Village. Four properties are on the National Register of Historic Places: the 1814 Friends Meetinghouse on Quaker Ridge, Nathaniel Hawthorne's Boyhood Home from 1818, the Watkins House and Cabins at Cape Road and Route 302, and the 1813 Richard Manning House in South Casco. Sebago Lake State Park, established in 1938, holds much of the town's big-lake shore, and summer camps such as Seeds of Peace and Camp Laurel South draw children and families every summer.
Electrical Permits and Inspections in Casco
Casco's code office does not list a local electrical permit among its applications. Its electrical service page says that a new service, or reconnecting an existing one, requires Central Maine Power forms 1190 and 1360, with form 1360 completed by a licensed electrician, and that homeowners doing their own wiring need a state single-family dwelling certificate. Permits for work the state requires them for, such as multi-family or commercial jobs, go to the Maine Electricians' Examining Board. Shoreland projects need a town shoreland permit, and septic work within 200 feet of Sebago Lake also involves the Portland Water District.
