Electrical Work in Raymond
Raymond is a lake town. Sebago Lake's Jordan Bay laps at the village, and Panther Pond, Crescent Lake and Thomas Pond fill much of the rest, so about a quarter of the town's area is water. Camps and year-round homes share the same shorelines and roads. From its base in Westbrook, Goodnow Electric, a Maine master electrician, takes Raymond calls for everything from a camp's first 200-amp service to a lakeside generator or a storm-bent mast, handling the town permit and the CMP shutoff and restore on each job.

Raymond has about 4,600 residents and roughly 3,050 homes by the 2020-2024 Census estimates, and some 1,000 of those homes, a third, are held for seasonal use. Just over half of occupied Raymond homes, about 51 percent, burn heating oil; propane covers about 16 percent, electricity about 15, wood stoves about 6, and piped gas reaches barely 1 percent. The electric share is high for a rural town, and where it means older baseboard heat, a switch to heat pumps can cut the cost of running it. Heat pumps replacing oil add winter load, and camps being winterized often need a bigger service before they can carry heat, a water heater and a well pump through January. Power Outages and the Grid in Raymond
Raymond's CMP lines are strung overhead through the woods between the lakes, and the trees crowding Route 302, Route 85, Route 121 and the lake lanes are what bring them down. Two recent storms show the scale: Maine's worst weather outage on record came with the October 2017 windstorm, over 400,000 customers statewide, and in March 2024 ice took down service for roughly 200,000 CMP accounts. A Raymond house on its own well has no water once the pump quits, and plenty of lakefront cellars count on a sump through the spring melt. Frye Island, reached by ferry from Raymond Neck, is its own town.
Getting to Know Raymond
Raymond village sits on Jordan Bay, an arm of Sebago Lake, and the town also includes the villages of East Raymond and North Raymond. Nathaniel Hawthorne lived in Raymond with his mother and siblings from about 1812 to 1825, and later wrote of boyhood days hiking the woods and fishing the lake. U.S. Route 302 and Maine Routes 85 and 121 run through town. The landscape is defined by water: Sebago, Panther Pond, Crescent Lake and Thomas Pond take up about 11.6 of the town's 44.75 square miles.
Electrical Permits and Inspections in Raymond
Electrical permits and inspections in Raymond stay in town. Code Enforcement, which also runs the Land Use Ordinance, shoreland rules and floodplain regulations, issues permits for building, electrical, plumbing, septic and shoreland projects, with inspections throughout. Electrical and plumbing permits can be issued the same day. The town's guidance says an electrical permit is needed for electrical work, including solar, heat pumps and standby generators, and that the work must be done by a Maine licensed electrician. Projects close to the water may also need a floodplain permit or a DEP permit. Work started in Raymond from July 1, 2026 on is judged against the 2026 edition of the National Electrical Code, which Maine adopted.
