About 71 percent of Limington’s occupied homes still heat with oil, according to the Census Bureau’s latest five-year figures, and that number shapes what a panel upgrade here usually has to plan for. Replacing a boiler or furnace with cold-climate heat pumps moves the whole heating load onto the electric service, and a 1970s or 1980s house on a 100-amp panel can run out of capacity once heat pumps, a well pump, an electric range and a dryer all want power on the same January evening. Roughly six in ten Limington homes were built between 1960 and 1999, so many panels are 25 to 60 years old, and some carry Federal Pacific or Zinsco equipment that many electricians recommend replacing outright.
A 200-amp upgrade normally means a new panel, meter socket, service-entrance conductors and often a new mast, plus a grounding system brought up to current standards. For a one- or two-family home getting a new service or a full service replacement, Maine’s electrical board now requires an outdoor emergency disconnect, on the building or on a pedestal within sight and within 50 feet. Mobile homes, about 9 percent of Limington’s housing, often take power from a pole or pedestal service rather than a mast on the house, so the upgrade path is different and is checked on site before anything is quoted. Whole-home surge protection is simple to add while the panel is open, and so is a generator inlet or transfer switch if backup power is on the list for later.
The paperwork here is local. Limington’s code office issues electrical permits, and its form prices a permanent service by the meter and CMP account, with a minimum permit fee, and notes that inspection must be requested at least 48 hours ahead.
