Electrical Panel Upgrades in Harrison, Maine

About a quarter of Harrison's homes were built between 1960 and 1979, and a house of that era was commonly wired with a 100-amp service and a panel with a few spare slots. That was plenty for an oil furnace, a range and some lights. It is not plenty for the way households heat and drive now. With half of the town's homes still on oil, each oil boiler that gives way to cold-climate heat pumps puts new 240-volt circuits on the panel, and families who have leaned on a woodstove for years often add heat pumps as the wood gets harder to split. The oldest village houses, about a fifth of the stock built before 1940, may still have a fuse box that was never meant for any of it.

Camps bring their own version of the problem. Roughly 500 homes in town are seasonal, and when one is winterized the panel suddenly carries a well pump in January, heat and a water heater at once. Detached garages, workshops and boathouses often hang off a small subpanel fed with undersized cable. Harrison's mobile homes, around 8 percent of its dwellings, draw power through a pole or pedestal meter and a feeder that has to match the new load. Maine's senior electrical inspector has also said that, in one- and two-family dwellings, a complete service upgrade now has to add an outdoor emergency disconnect, mounted on the house wall or on a pedestal in sight of it and no more than 50 feet off.

In most Harrison houses the work comes down to a 200-amp panel and meter socket, fresh service-entrance cable and, often, a new mast.
