Electrical Work in Newfield
Newfield is a hill town of about 1,600 people in northwestern York County. The Little Ossipee River runs through Newfield village, West Newfield is its second settlement, and the western town line is the New Hampshire border at Wakefield. Routes 11 and 110 cross it and Province Mountain rises to 1,176 feet. Nearly every home is an owner-occupied single-family house, most of them heated with oil, and that combination shapes the electrical work here: aging services, heat pump conversions and backup power for long outages.

The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 American Community Survey counts about 1,170 housing units in Newfield. Roughly 92 percent are detached single-family homes, and about 97 percent of occupied homes are lived in by their owners. The median year built is 1977. Newfield is in Central Maine Power territory, inside the utility's Alfred district on the state's electric service area map. The town is heavily wooded, and the Great Fires of 1947 damaged it badly, which is part of why so much of its housing is newer than the village itself. York County has been included in several federal major disaster declarations for storms, among them the October 2017 windstorm, the January 2024 storms and flooding, and the severe winter storm that began April 3, 2024. For a house that relies on an electric well pump, a sump pump and an oil boiler's controls, a planned transfer switch or standby generator turns a long outage into an inconvenience.
Getting to Know Newfield
Newfield village grew around mills on the Little Ossipee River, which once powered two gristmills, two lumber mills, a barrel stave mill, a shook mill, a planing mill and a carding mill, while West Newfield had its own sawmill, gristmill and stave mill. North of the town center on Elm Street, the Newfield (Willowbrook) Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1985, covers much of the former Willowbrook Museum Village, a re-created nineteenth-century village of 34 buildings on about 10 acres. Around those clusters sit farmhouses, postwar rebuilds, 1970s ranches and camps on wooded lots.

Newfield's Code Enforcement Officer administers the town's zoning ordinance and building codes and also enforces shoreland zoning, the state plumbing and subsurface wastewater rules and the floodplain management ordinance. The town's list of applications includes a separate electrical permit alongside building, shoreland zone building, growth and driveway permits. Building permits, which exclude electrical and plumbing, stay valid for two years with continuous progress, and complete applications are reviewed within 30 days.
