Electrical Panel Upgrades in Alfred, Maine

With about 65 percent of Alfred homes still heating with oil, many owners are weighing a switch to heat pumps, and that switch lands on the electrical panel. A house built in the 1960s or 1970s, about a quarter of Alfred's housing, often has a 100-amp service that was fine for an oil boiler, a range and a dryer but has little room for two or three heat pump outdoor units. Add an EV charger or a well pump upgrade, and the numbers stop working. The older village and farmhouse stock has different problems. Signs of trouble include fuses that blow often, breakers that will not stay on, a warm or buzzing panel, and lights that dim when the well pump or furnace starts. About 12 percent of Alfred homes are mobile homes and about 12 percent are in small multi-family buildings, and both need care. Maine also now requires an outdoor emergency disconnect on new services and full service upgrades for one- and two-family homes, within sight and 50 feet of the house.
