Electrical Panel Upgrades in Shapleigh, Maine

About 43 percent of Shapleigh's housing units are held for seasonal use, the Census Bureau reports, and many of those camps around Mousam Lake and Square Pond were wired for summer weekends: lights, a refrigerator, a water pump and perhaps a few baseboard heaters. When a camp becomes a retirement home or a year-round rental, the service is often the first thing that falls short. A 60 or 100 amp panel that handled July without complaint can struggle with electric heat, a water heater, a well pump and a kitchen all running on a January evening. Old fuse boxes and split-bus panels, common in camps that were never fully rebuilt, also leave no spaces for the circuits a winter kitchen and bathroom require.

Year-round houses have their own reasons to upgrade. About 12 percent of occupied homes in town heat mainly with electricity, and about 57 percent burn oil, so heat pump conversions are the common trigger. A load calculation settles whether the existing service can carry the new equipment or whether a move to 200 amps is needed.
